（和文概要）

ハザードが災害へと転化する社会的メカニズムや、災害復興に地域差をもたらす社会的要因の解明をテーマとした実証的研究に取組んでいます。災害の発生を与件とするのではなく、そもそもどうして災害が起こるのかを平時の社会構造的脈絡や開発の歴史的沿革に遡って捉えることを目的とした研究です。これまでスマトラ地震の被災地であるインドネシア・アチェや、東日本大震災の被災地である東北地方（特に宮城県）をフィールドに、災害の発生や長期復興に関する比較研究に取組んできました。そうした研究を踏まえ、災害脆弱性の地域的、歴史的理解を深めるとともに、特に防災や復興に果たすコミュニティの役割に注目し、そのレジリエンスの向上に資する研究成果を生み出すことを目指しています。

（英文概要）

Our research focuses on social aspect of natural disaster, specifically focusing on social mechanisms which transform hazards into disasters and the determinant factors which create differences in terms of disaster recovery. It is necessary to ask not only “how to cope with disaster” but also “why disaster happens”. With respect to root causes of disaster, we consider socio-ecological structures of everyday life and historical process of regional development as great significant. From such viewpoints, we have conducted the comparative research between Aceh in Indonesia and Tohoku (especially Miyagi prefecture) in terms of long-term reconstruction process following large-scale disasters. Based on these studies, we aim to improve local and historical understanding of vulnerabilities and resilience especially focusing on the roles played by community.
